Just as the wheeze and sneeze season gets into full swing, the Duluth School District is embarking on an effort to improve the indoor air quality of its schools.

This month, the School Board approved hiring consultants to test the air at three elementary schools — Grant, Chester Park and Congdon Park. Results from those schools will help the district shape a comprehensive plan to attack the problem.

Three years ago, Dean Talbott was standing in foot-deep snow, directing overflow traffic at the tour of a super energy-efficient home owned by Mike Koppy and Carol Bonde in Hermantown.

Two hundred people showed up for the event in near blizzard conditions. Some 400 more showed up at an encore tour a few weeks later, recalls Talbott, a consultant on the home who works for Minnesota Power.

“That’s when we realized people are really hungry for this kind of information,” he said.
